After several delays, The Idol finally has a premiere date. The TV show, co-created by Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye with his longtime collaborator Reza Fahim and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, will debut on HBO on Sunday, June 4, at 9 p.m. Eastern. (It’ll also be available to stream on Max.) A new teaser trailer for The Idol has also been released, and it provides a closer look at Tesfaye and Lily-Rose Depp as the series’ lead stars. Watch it below.

Billed by HBO as “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood,” The Idol centers around Tesfaye, who plays Tedros, a cult leader in the entertainment business, and Depp as Jocelyn, a pop star who’s one of his followers. Other cast members include Dan Levy, Rachel Sennott, Moses Sumney, and Jennie from Blackpink. Before its televised premiere, The Idol will be screened at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival under the Official Selection Out of Competition banner.

Last month, Rolling Stone published an investigation into The Idol in which sources described staff changes, a new creative direction, and troubling script ideas akin to “sexual torture porn” that were allegedly thrown out. Amy Seimetz originally signed on to direct the show, but left last year with most of the show filmed. The production crew expected a new director to film the finale and wrap production, but instead sources told Rolling Stone that Levinson scrapped the nearly complete “$54-75 million project to rewrite and reshoot the entire thing.”

“The creators and producers of The Idol have been working hard to create one of HBO’s most exciting and provocative original programs. The initial approach on the show and production of the early episodes, unfortunately, did not meet HBO standards so we chose to make a change,” a representative for HBO said in a previous statement. “Throughout the process, the creative team has been committed to creating a safe, collaborative, and mutually respectful working environment, and last year, the team made creative changes they felt were in the best interest of both the production and the cast and crew.”

The Weeknd made a surprise appearance at Coachella over the weekend, joining Metro Boomin’s closing set in the Sahara Tent to perform six songs. One of the tracks, titled “Double Fantasy,” is from The Idol Vol. 1 and marked the first time he’s ever performed it live.
