Savannah James took to Instagram to celebrate Bronny James‘ entry into the NBA.
In a heartfelt post on Friday, she shared a photo of her son sporting the iconic Purple & Gold jersey of the LA Lakers, proudly displaying his newly chosen jersey number, 9.
Bronny‘s journey to the NBA took a significant step forward when the Lakers selected him as the No. 55 overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft, following his freshman season at USC.
This move sets the stage for Bronny to potentially form the NBA’s first active father-son duo alongside his father, LeBron James, pending the latter’s contract extension with the Lakers.
Opting for the jersey number 9, Bronny pays homage to Lakers history, previously worn by esteemed figures such as Nick Van Exel, Matt Barnes, and Rajon Rondo.
This choice follows Bronny‘s previous jersey numbers, including No. 0 during his high school years and No. 6 in college, which honored LeBron‘s jersey numbers before No. 6 was retired league-wide in honor of Bill Russell.
Cleared after cardiac arrest
Bronny‘s path to the NBA was marked by resilience, overcoming challenges such as a cardiac arrest incident last summer.
He was given the green light by the NBA’s Fitness to Play Panel after undergoing a procedure to repair a congenital heart defect and recovering from a cardiac arrest last year, sources revealed to ESPN.
The panel, consisting of three physicians, unanimously approved James, signaling that he is medically fit to engage in all combine activities, including the pivotal 5-on-5 scrimmages.
