Many people thought it was a fair trade, even when it involved many players were not even considered in the NBA because they were yet to be drafted. Many thought it would help the Los Angeles Clippers get to the next level and win a championship.
Five years later it seems it might be the case. After Paul George opted out of his last year option in Los Angeles and elected to be a free agent, the aftermath looks not so good. The analysis for the teams benefits by far the Thunder. Even if the Clippers got a professional proven player.
Here is what the trade looked like in the past. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Danilo Gallinari, 2022 first-round pick, 2024 first-round pick, 2026 first-round pick, first-round picks via Miami in 2021 and 2023 and the rights to swap picks with the Clippers in 2023 and 2025, that is what the Clipper traded to Oklahoma City.
It definitely was a good trade for Oklahoma City
Paul George for Gilgeous-Alexander, a top-five player in the league and five first-round draft picks. The Thunder already won the trade at the time, but many believed it was the other way around.
Because of the way the Paul Geroge played it indicated that, even with players to be drafted at the time were not even close to what it may occur in Los Angeles, but after the last season and the way the Clippers have played, it has been very rare to actually believe they can get to a conference championship or even win it all.
So, the end result is that the Clippers were the losers by far after letting go all the players and potential future players they could have collected and the Thunder, after many years of doubts, they might be on the verge of being an actual contender.
