Angel Reese continues to attract lots of praise and attention through her rookie season with the Chicago Sky and she might have got her highest one yet as her head coach compares her to five-time NBA champion and legend, Dennis Rodman, but how are the pair similar?
Rodman‘s style of play was defined by his exceptional rebounding, aggressive defense, and unyielding hustle. Known as “The Worm,” Rodman excelled in disrupting opponents’ plays and securing crucial rebounds. His relentless energy and physicality made him a formidable defender, often guarding multiple positions.
It’s his energy and determination and sheer drive that Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon believes the 22-year-old LSU Tiger graduate shares with one of the finest names in NBA history, offering high praise to her player.
“She’s relentless just like (Dennis Rodman) is on the glass,” Weatherspoon told media. “But Angel is Angel…and she’s creating her own name.”
Weatherspoon is a two-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year so if anyone knows what she is talking about, it’s her but to be fair, nobody can deny the energy and determination Reese possesses.
Especially when the chips are down and her team are in the trenches but the comparisons might even go further than their talent and delves into their personalities too. Rodman was known for his outspoken attitude and Reese is clearly not afraid to say what’s on her mind.
With a similar talent and fire on and off the court, it’s fair to see why the NCAA Women’s Division I championship winner is earning the comparisons to legendary icons of the basketball world such as the 63-year-old Rodman.
Reese’s WNBA stats
Despite most of the attention falling on Caitlin Clark, leaving Cameron Brink, Reese and Kamilla Kardoso to fight it out in the shadows for a scrap of interest from the wider media, the Sky forward is emerging as a strong candidate for rookie of the year.
Through 2024, the ace is averaging 13.5 points per game, 24 rebounds per game and 1.5 steals per game, highlighted with an exceptional performance against the Seattle Storm on June 7 when she shot for 27 points and 10 rebounds.
