Everyone knows about Bronny James‘ NBA lineage. Many believe that the eldest son of LeBron James will suit up with his dad next season, and the Los Angeles Lakers‘ duo will become the first father-son combo to play together in league history.
However, that is all contingent on Bronny breaking with the Lakers this fall. Amid Lakers coach JJ Redick’s comments that Bronny will spend some time in the developmental G League as a rookie, speculation continues to ramp up that the 19-year-old isn’t ready for the pace of the NBA — and that speculation has been bolstered by his Summer League struggles.
Jaylen Brown has second thoughts
In Las Vegas on Monday, Bronny and the Lakers faced the Boston Celtics — whose star player Jaylen Brown was seated courtside. Lip-readers on social media made out what Brown was saying to girlfriend Kysre Gondrezick and her former Chicago Sky teammate Angel Reese — “I don’t think Bronny is a pro.”
That comment and its resultant footage immediately went viral, and Brown on Tuesday morning was compelled to respond on X/Twitter. The NBA Finals MVP seemed to be posting for LeBron’s benefit, if no one else.
“It’s a flex to have your son alongside you in the NBA, it reflects greatness and longevity,” Brown wrote.
While many on social media believe that Brown was shamed into walking back comments he made in a private chat, the remarks continue to reflect the prevailing notion about Bronny: that his father strongarmed the Lakers into drafting him instead of someone more “deserving” of an NBA opportunity. After he scored just two points in 25 minutes during Monday’s 88-74 loss to Boston, Bronny has plenty of work to do in order to make NBA stars eat their words.
