Is that time of the year, where certain teams that will fall short of making the playoffs are already thinking about next season and the Dallas Cowboys fit that category. That means that they already are in Draft mode, but some twists might be in play.
Ashton Jeanty, the star running back for the Boise State Broncos, is on the brink of history as he closes in on Barry Sanders’ single-season rushing record set in 1988. With 2,497 rushing yards on 344 carries and an impressive 29 touchdowns this season, Jeanty needs just 132 more yards to surpass Sanders’ legendary mark of 2,628 yards.
To many, he is the correct choice for the Cowboys as they need a start in the backfield despite what Rico Dowdle has done this year, but some experts say that Dallas will definitely go on another direction in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Passing on the star running back
NFL reporter Luke Easterling has started the Mock Draft frenzy and according to him and his sources, the Cowboys will select a wide receiver in the name of Luther Burden III. The youngster has established himself as a dynamic wide receiver for the Missouri Tigers, becoming a key player in their offensive lineup.
Burden, originally from St. Louis, Missouri, quickly made his mark as a freshman with 45 receptions for 375 yards and five touchdowns. His sophomore season saw even greater success, leading the team with 83 receptions for 1,197 yards and eight touchdowns, earning second-team CBS Sports All-America honors.
In 2024, Burden continued to excel, showcasing his versatility with 61 catches for 676 yards and six touchdowns, alongside 115 rushing yards and two touchdowns. As a top prospect for the 2025 NFL Draft, Burden’s blend of speed, agility, and playmaking ability positions him as a promising talent for the professional level and according to one expert, he could soon be on his way to Dallas.
