Gilbert Arenas made a tough decision when he terminated his $40 million contract with Adidas. In 2010, “Agent Zero” was found with an unloaded firearm in the Washington Wizards locker room and subsequently pled guilty to felony charges.
During an interview with DJ Vlad, Arenas shared insights into his decision-making process.

Arenas, a three-time All-Star, wanted to avoid court. He believed that pleading guilty to a felony would keep him out of court and jail, allowing him to move on quickly.
“I was under the impression at the time that if I pleaded for the felony, I wouldn’t be going to court and then you know I complete no jail time. It’s all over. We can move on,” Arenas explained to DJ Vlad. He wasn’t aware that he could potentially avoid court and retain his Adidas deal.
Despite not knowing all the clauses in his five-year Adidas contract, Arenas chose his freedom and ability to continue playing in the NBA over the lucrative deal.
He wanted to resolve the incident swiftly, believing it was primarily an NBA matter rather than a legal issue. Unfortunately, Arenas did end up in court, and while he avoided jail time, he faced other penalties.
The judge sentenced him to two years probation, starting with 30 days in a halfway house, 400 hours of community service, and a $5,000 fine. In January 2010, the NBA suspended Arenas for the season.
Rebuilding His Reputation
Following his suspension, Arenas worked hard to rebuild his reputation. He later reconnected with Adidas, and his signature shoes were relaunched as retro releases, available in stores.
“If I ever want an Adidas deal again I had to clean up me, right? And that’s what I did,” Arenas said on the show.
He became a prominent figure on social media and in the basketball community, leading Adidas to re-release his shoes. Initially, Adidas sold his merchandise without a formal contract, but Arenas eventually started earning from the sales.
Arenas’s story illustrates that a single mistake does not define a person. He acknowledged his error and dedicated himself to restoring his reputation.
Today, Arenas enjoys success both through Adidas sales and his popular “Gil’s Arena” podcast, proving that resilience and hard work can overcome past missteps.
