Josh Hines-Allen: I’m still the same person
Hines-Allen, who has made a name for himself in the NFL since being the seventh overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, has faced the unique challenge of sharing his name with Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
However, this name change goes beyond avoiding confusion; it is a tribute to his maternal family.
“Legacy is forever, and I’m proud to carry that tradition on the back of my jersey, following in the footsteps of my family, who have donned the Hines-Allen last name with so much pride and joy,”Hines-Allen expressed.
“My last name has been changed, but I’m still that person. And I will continue to play like it, play even better.”
Hines-Allen’s family name is well-known in the sports world, especially among his sisters.
Myisha Hines-Allen is a prominent player for the Washington Mystics, while his other sisters, Kyra and LaTorri, have also made their mark in collegiate basketball.
His uncles, Gregory and Keith Hines, have notable athletic backgrounds as well, with Gregory being in the Hampton University Athletics Hall of Fame.
Hines-Allen hosting jersey swap for fans
The name change announcement was made via social media, and Hines-Allen will debut his new name on the back of his No. 41 jersey when training camp begins on July 24.
To celebrate this change, he will host a jersey exchange event in Jacksonville this September for fans who own his “Allen 41” jersey.
In addition to embracing his family’s legacy, Hines-Allen recently secured a five-year, $150 million contract with the Jaguars, cementing his status as one of the highest-paid players in the NFL.
This contract extension is a significant achievement, reflecting his impact on the team since his rookie year when he earned a Pro Bowl nod.
Hines-Allen’s career highlights include a memorable moment in 2021 when he sacked Bills quarterback Josh Allen, marking the first time a player sacked a quarterback with the same name.
With the Jaguars set to face the Bills in Week 3 this season, Hines-Allen’s name change ensures that there will no longer be any mix-ups between the two players.
