Jerry Jones has billions, but underpaid his world-renowned Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, Netflix clip reveals

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, known as the most famous cheerleading group in the world, recently sparked controversy when a Netflix clip revealed that the team’s cheerleaders are not paid very much by the NFL franchise. Despite reportedly bringing in over $1 million annually for the franchise, the cheerleaders apparently make as much as a fast food worker or substitute teacher.

The news has caused quite a stir, with Sports Illustrated among those calling out Jerry Jones and the Cowboys for underpaying the cheerleaders. “Many were outraged to learn about the sacrifices and little pay the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders were forced to endure to make their dreams come true. A scene from the Netflix reality show America’s Sweethearts went viral after one of the Cowboys’ cheerleaders said they make the same amount of money as fast food workers and substitute teachers“, says the report.

It was also revealed that many of the cheerleaders have to take on second jobs to keep up with bills, while others aren’t able to work for long stretches due to injuries sustained while performing on game days.

The outcry has raised hopes for better pay for NFL cheerleaders in the future. It’s been pointed out that doing it solely out of passion isn’t right, especially when the employer is worth billions. Charlotte Jones, daughter of team owner Jerry Jones and the Cowboys’ executive vice president and chief brand officer, faced criticism for her response to the lack of pay for the cheerleaders.

Charlotte Jones defends compensation

In response to the criticism, Charlotte Jones, who helps oversee the cheerleaders, stated: “They have a passion for dance. There are not a lot of opportunities in the field of dance, and to get to perform at an elite level. … It is about being a part of something bigger than themselves.”

This statement reflects the perspective that the cheerleaders are driven by their love for dance and the opportunity to perform at an elite level, rather than just financial compensation.

While it’s clear that the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders are not in it for the money, the situation has ignited an understandable criticism. Hopefully, this will lead to positive changes in how cheerleaders are compensated and valued in the future.
