Lakers betting on inexperienced coach? Rumors strongly point to JJ Reddick

JJ Redick is reportedly the front-runner for the head coaching position with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to a report from The Athletic’s Shams Charania. While no official decision has been made, Redick is said to be the favorite over fellow candidate James Borrego, who is the associate head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans.

The 39-year-old Redick, a former NBA player known for his sharpshooting skills, has never held a coaching position beyond the youth level. However, his extensive experience as a player and his deep understanding of the game make him a compelling candidate for the role.

After playing 15 seasons in the NBA and establishing himself as a standout shooting guard at Duke University, Redick transitioned to a career as a broadcast analyst for ESPN following his retirement as a player in 2021. His expertise and insights as an NBA analyst have garnered him widespread recognition in the basketball community.

According to the report, the Lakers are still in the process of conducting their head-coaching search and have multiple steps planned. Redick’s emergence as a coaching candidate is not new, as he has previously interviewed for coaching positions with other teams, including the Charlotte Hornets and the Toronto Raptors.

Reddick is LeBron’s podcast partner

The Lakers’ apparent interest in Redick is further emphasized by their consultation with former Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski, who coached Redick during his collegiate career. This connection suggests that the Lakers are considering Redick’s potential not only as a coach but also as a leader who can inspire and guide players to success on and off the court.

Additionally, Redick’s existing relationship with LeBron James, a co-host of a podcast with the Lakers superstar, adds another layer of intrigue to his potential role with the team. This connection could potentially contribute to a seamless transition and foster strong rapport within the organization.

The report highlights that the Lakers have become “infatuated” with Redick during their coaching search, indicating a strong inclination towards him for the position. As the team continues its deliberations, it’s evident that Redick’s combination of basketball acumen, leadership potential, and established relationships within the basketball world make him a compelling candidate for the head coaching role with the Los Angeles Lakers.
