With the NBA Draft done and dusted, teams now have their eyes fully on free agency, which officially begins on June 30. After selecting Dalton Knecht and Bronny James, the Los Angeles Lakers will have some new faces on the roster this upcoming season. But they need more.
With that in mind, the Lakers have to create some workarounds to be able to fit in new additions within the salary cap. In order to do so, LeBron James is stepping up and taking one for the team so they can get better and compete for a championship again.
LeBron James to take pay cut to sign a solid veteran?
James will opt out of his contract and sign a new deal that would see him making about $17 million less. That move would open up a full mid-level exception contract.
While it wouldn’t be enough money to really make a splash and land a star, it would get the Lakers a starter or bench contributor that would be an improvement over what they had last season. Klay Thompson, who will leave the Golden State Warriors, has already been strongly linked to be the main target.
Miles Bridges, Jonas Valanciunas and Caleb Martin have been some other popular names that could be options for the front office.
