The first day of NFL Training Camp is one of the most exciting days of the year for football fans. Then, with one dramatic slip, Kansas City Chiefs supporters went from celebrating the return of Travis Kelce and the excitement of new deep threat Xavier Worthy, to worrying about who is Patrick Mahomes’ backup quarterback.
It was an unsuspecting moment at the beginning of the day that made the hearts of the thousands of Chiefs fans in attendance on Sunday skip a beat.
Patrick Mahomes led out Andy Reid‘s group of quarterbacks, which includes Carson Wentz, Ian Book and Chris Oladokun. But the walk along the artificial turf down to the practice field proved to be more perilous than anybody expected.
“No QBs were harmed in the making of this video,” wrote the Chiefs social media accounts, touching on a sensitive subject.

It was Wentz who stumbled on the artificial surface, nearly twisting his ankle and leaving Patrick Mahomes in stitches with laughter. “Are you kidding me? You gotta post that,” the Super Bowl MVP joked when he noticed that someone recorded the awkward slip.
The scary moment proved to everyone just how quickly the fortunes of a franchise can change and how important a backup quarterback can be. Wentz is the perfect example. In 2017, he led the Philadelphia Eagles to the playoffs, then tore his ACL. Backup Nick Foles became an NFL legend by stepping in and guiding the Eagles to the Super Bowl.
Now in Foles’ shoes, Wentz was signed to be Mahomes’ backup, as long as he can avoid any more slips. No. 15 clearly saw the funny side of things, but it’s safe to say Chiefs fans weren’t expecting to think about their backup quarterback on one of the most highly-anticipated days of the season.
