The result was a séance with a past that now seems more ancient than ever. The Grateful Dead has not truly been the Grateful Dead for nearly 30 years, since the 1995 death of the founding singer and guitarist Jerry Garcia. The final concerts with the four remaining original members took place in 2015, and the closest thing to a direct successor, Dead & Company, ended its touring last year (though it played concerts this year at the Sphere in Las Vegas).
