Skip Bayless’s chances of returning to ESPN revealed as network breaks silence on FS1 departure

Skip Bayless, a prominent figure in sports media, is preparing to leave FS1 amid plummeting ratings for his show “Undisputed.” Speculation about his next move has been rife, but it appears a return to ESPN is unlikely based on recent statements from the network.

Bayless, well-known for his tenure at ESPN, transitioned from being an award-winning columnist for major newspapers like The Dallas Morning News, Los Angeles Times, and Chicago Tribune to a national figure through ESPN. His profile soared when he co-hosted “First Take,” starting in 2007 and later pairing with Stephen A. Smith in 2012, creating a dynamic and popular duo.

In 2016, Bayless left ESPN to join FS1, where he co-hosted “Undisputed” with Shannon Sharpe. The show initially garnered attention and viewership, but Sharpe’s departure last summer triggered a significant ratings decline. Recently, “Undisputed” has been averaging fewer than 50,000 viewers per episode, a stark contrast to “First Take,” which enjoys around ten times that number.

On Monday, The New York Post reported FS1’s decision to part ways with Bayless after eight years, with the final episode of “Undisputed” set to air later this summer. At 72, Bayless faces a turning point in his career, and while retirement might be a sensible option, some speculated a potential reunion with ESPN and Stephen A. Smith.

However, a spokesperson for ESPN, speaking to Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports, indicated that such a reunion is not on the cards. This clarification puts to rest any rumors of Bayless returning to the network where he became a household name.

As Bayless steps down from FS1, his future in sports media remains uncertain, marking the end of a significant chapter in his career.
