The redshirt junior, hailed for his competitive spirit and leadership, was struck by a stray bullet while an innocent bystander during a violent altercation involving two vehicles exchanging gunfire in Columbus, Ohio.
The 21-year-old, originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, was rushed to the hospital in serious condition but is expected to survive, according to local reports. Ohio State’s athletic department confirmed the incident in a heartfelt statement, emphasizing Demian’s innocence and requesting prayers for his recovery.
Demian is not part of the investigation
“Nathan was an innocent bystander, not a suspect in any way, and was not involved in any altercation,” the statement read. “The soccer program is thankful for the incredible university support and medical care available to Nathan and his family during this difficult time. We will do all we can to support Nathan, his family, and the team.”
Police reports reveal that Demian was caught in the crossfire as two vehicles chased each other while exchanging gunfire. Authorities assured the public that Demian is not a suspect in the ongoing investigation.
Demian has been a pivotal player for the Buckeyes this season, featuring in 14 games and contributing to their impressive journey to the national semifinals. The team recently triumphed over Michigan to clinch the Big Ten tournament title and secured NCAA tournament victories against Western Michigan, Stanford, and Wake Forest.
The Buckeyes will miss the defender
As the Buckeyes prepare to face Marshall on Friday for a spot in the national championship game, head coach Brian Maisonneuve acknowledged the emotional toll on the team.
“We’re going to miss him on the field,” Maisonneuve said. “But he’s such a huge personality. He gets everybody going in practice and games. His play speaks for itself-he’s a competitor. It’s going to be tough not to have him out there.”
The Buckeyes remain focused on their title ambitions but carry heavy hearts as they play for Demian, their injured teammate and friend.
