For the 11th time in the 2024 NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs played a game in which the final margin of victory was within one possession. And for the 11th time in 2024, the Chiefs won a one-score game, defeating the Houston Texans on Saturday to improve to an NFL-best 14-1.
Still, the 27-19 win over the Texans at Arrowhead Stadium did not come easily to the Chiefs. Kansas City trailed in the second quarter; the champs’ running game wasn’t always on point; and Travis Kelce was lost in the shuffle as Patrick Mahomes (293 total yards, two touchdowns) targeted many different receivers in a rare Saturday NFL game.

Kelce unable to pass Tony Gonzalez
Kelce is widely regarded as one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history, alongside Tony Gonzalez — who spent the balance of his Hall of Fame career with the Chiefs. Kelce on Saturday had a chance to pass Gonzalez for the most touchdown receptions in franchise history — but the milestone, achieved with one more TD catch — will have to wait another week, after Houston limited the 35-year-old to five catches and 30 yards.
What hurts more is that Kelce could not break the record with Taylor Swift in attendance — likely for the final time in the regular season. Though the Chiefs won another game with Kelce’s pop star girlfriend in attendance, the ever-supportive Swift would have liked nothing more than to witness Chiefs history — and the same goes for her fans, some of whom aired their frustrations on social media.
Kelce has only two touchdown receptions for the season, and the Chiefs’ final two regular season games are on the road; Swift has not ventured further than Arrowhead Stadium to watch Kelce play this season. Still, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Denver Broncos will be on high alert to make sure the 35-year-old tight end does not slip past them as the 2024 regular season draws to a conclusion.
